What activities are good for pre-primary children?
Good pre-primary activities are hands-on, playful and short: rhymes and action songs, storytelling with puppets, block building, sand and water play, clay and drawing, sorting and counting games, pretend play (shop, kitchen, doctor), nature walks, simple science (floating and sinking), music and dance, and outdoor running, balancing and throwing games.
What this means in practice
Choose activities that build several areas at once: language, number, thinking, fine and gross motor skills and social skills.
Activities by skill
- Language: stories, puppets, show and tell
- Literacy: sound games, letter tracing in sand
- Numeracy: counting bottle caps, pattern beads
- Fine motor: clay, threading, tearing paper
- Gross motor: hopscotch, ball games
- Social: role play, group building
Low-cost materials
Bottle caps, cardboard boxes, newspapers, leaves, seeds, cloth scraps and old magazines all make excellent learning materials.
Planning a balanced week
Aim for variety across the week: some quiet and some active activities, some indoors and some outdoors, some led by children and some guided by you. Cover language, numbers, creativity, movement and social skills. A simple grid with days across the top and skills down the side helps you see gaps. Rotate learning-corner materials weekly so children stay curious.
Practical next steps
- Collect free materials.
- Plan a mix of indoor and outdoor activities each day.
- Rotate learning corners weekly.
