How do I become a pre-primary (ECDE) teacher in Kenya?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

To teach in public pre-primary (ECDE) classes in Kenya you normally need a recognised ECDE certificate or diploma and registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC); county governments employ public ECDE teachers. Private schools set their own requirements, and many value additional early-years training such as APTTI's pre-primary course.

What this means in practice

Under the Competency Based Curriculum, children attend PP1 and PP2 before Grade 1, so play-based, competency-focused teaching skills are in demand.

Typical route

  • Complete KCSE
  • Take a recognised ECDE certificate or diploma
  • Register with TSC
  • Apply for county ECDE or private school posts

Where APTTI's course fits

As professional development for ECDE teachers, for private school teachers and for those setting up private pre-schools in Nairobi, Mombasa or Kisumu.

Teaching under the CBC

Kenya's Competency Based Curriculum emphasises competencies such as communication, creativity and problem-solving from PP1. Pre-primary teachers are expected to use learner-centred, activity-based methods, observe progress and involve parents. Training in play-based learning, phonics, observation and classroom routines fits these expectations well. Whatever qualification route you take, being able to describe how your activities build CBC competencies is a strong point in interviews.

Practical next steps

  • Check TSC registration requirements.
  • Choose a recognised ECDE programme if you need TSC registration.
  • Add APTTI training for extra skills or private school roles.
ExampleWanjiru, a TSC-registered ECDE teacher in Nairobi, took APTTI's Montessori course to add Montessori methods to her PP2 class.
What to keep in mind: This is general guidance; confirm current requirements with TSC and your county government.
