Montessori vs pre-primary teacher training: which is better?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

Neither is better in general; they suit different settings. Montessori training teaches the Montessori method: prepared environments, specific materials, mixed-age groups and child-led work. Pre-primary training is broader, covering play-based, thematic and activity-based methods used in most nursery, LKG and UKG classes. At APTTI both have the same levels and fees.

What this means in practice

If you want to work in a Montessori house, choose Montessori; for general pre-primary jobs in schools, pre-primary training fits more settings.

Key differences

  • Method: Montessori-specific versus a mix of early-years approaches
  • Materials: Montessori apparatus versus general play materials
  • Classroom: mixed ages and child-chosen work versus age-based groups with themes
  • Jobs: Montessori schools versus all pre-schools and school pre-primary sections

Combining them

Many teachers take pre-primary training first and add Montessori later, or the other way round. APTTI's pre-primary course already includes Montessori-influenced skills.

Montessori ideas in any classroom

Even in a non-Montessori school, Montessori ideas are useful: low shelves so children choose materials, practical-life activities like pouring and buttoning, uninterrupted work time and respect for children's independence. Pre-primary training introduces several of these. If you find you love them, a full Montessori course deepens your understanding of the materials and the philosophy behind them.

Practical next steps

  • List the schools you want to work in.
  • Check whether they follow Montessori.
  • Choose the course that matches.
ExampleIshita in Kolkata saw that most job adverts near her were for CBSE pre-primary wings, so she chose pre-primary training and added Montessori later.
What to keep in mind: Formal Montessori accreditation (such as AMI) is a separate route; APTTI's course is professional training.

Common follow-up questions
