TEFL vs pre-primary teacher training: which should I take?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

Take pre-primary teacher training if you want to teach nursery, LKG and UKG classes, covering all areas of early development. Take TEFL (or APTTI's Teaching Young Learners course) if you mainly want to teach English as a foreign language, often abroad or online. Some teachers combine them to teach English in international kindergartens.

What this means in practice

Pre-primary training covers child development, play, routines and all early learning areas; TEFL focuses on language teaching methods.

Comparison

  • Focus: whole early-years curriculum versus English language teaching
  • Students: ages 2 to 6 versus all ages (young learners courses focus on children)
  • Jobs: pre-schools versus language schools and ESL roles

When to combine

If you want to teach English to young children in Asia or the Gulf, pre-primary training plus a young learners or TEFL course is a strong combination.

Teaching English to very young learners

Young children learn English best through songs, stories, movement, routines and play, not grammar explanations. Pre-primary training gives you these methods for all areas of learning; a young learners or TEFL course adds language-teaching techniques such as controlled practice, correction and communicative activities. If your job will be mainly English for 3 to 6-year-olds, the combination is especially useful.

Practical next steps

  • Decide whether you want to teach a class or teach English.
  • Check target job adverts.
  • Choose one or combine.
ExampleMaria, a Filipino graduate, combined APTTI's pre-primary PG Diploma with Teaching Young Learners for an English-medium kindergarten in Vietnam.
What to keep in mind: Recognition of TEFL and early-years training varies by country.

Common follow-up questions

Yes: Teaching Young Learners, 240 hours, ₹30,000 / US$475.

Is TEFL enough to teach KG?

Some language-focused roles accept it; full KG roles usually prefer early-years training.
