Who is called a pre-primary teacher?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

A pre-primary teacher is a trained educator who teaches and cares for young children before they start primary school, usually between about 2½ and 6 years old. They work in nursery, LKG, UKG, kindergarten, play-school and pre-school classes, and build children's language, early literacy and numeracy, social, emotional and physical skills through play and hands-on activities.

What this means in practice

Different places use different names for the same role: nursery teacher, KG teacher, pre-school teacher, early-years teacher, kindergarten teacher, ECDE teacher in Kenya or Montessori teacher in a Montessori setting. What unites them is the age group and the play-based way of teaching.

Where pre-primary teachers work

  • Nursery, LKG and UKG sections of private CBSE, ICSE, state-board and international schools
  • Standalone play schools and pre-school franchises
  • Montessori houses and kindergartens
  • Day-care centres with an education programme
  • Government and community early-childhood programmes, such as anganwadis and Balvatika classes in India

What they are responsible for

  • Planning and leading age-appropriate activities
  • Keeping the classroom safe, clean and welcoming
  • Observing and recording each child's progress
  • Keeping parents and caregivers informed
  • Working with specialists such as speech or occupational therapists when a child needs extra support

How someone becomes one

Most pre-primary teachers complete early-years training such as pre-primary teacher training, NTT, Montessori or ECCE. Private schools usually hire on that training plus skills shown at interview; government posts follow their own qualification rules. APTTI's pre-primary course runs from a 10th-pass Certificate to a graduate-level Integrated PG Diploma.

Practical next steps

  • Decide which age group and setting you want to work in.
  • Choose a training level that matches your qualification.
  • Gain practice with young children while you study.
  • Apply to pre-schools and school pre-primary sections.
ExampleNeha is called a 'KG teacher' at her Dubai school and a 'pre-primary teacher' on her Indian CV. The job is the same: she teaches a class of 4 and 5-year-olds through play, stories and routines.
What to keep in mind: Job titles vary, but responsibilities for safety and child protection are the same everywhere. Follow your school's policies from day one.
