What is early childhood care and education (ECCE)?
Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is the care, health, nutrition, play and learning support given to children from birth to about 8 years. In India, NEP 2020 makes universal access to quality ECCE a goal, through anganwadis, pre-schools and pre-primary sections of schools, and treats ECCE as the foundation of the 5+3+3+4 structure.
What this means in practice
ECCE recognises that young children need both care and education together, not one after the other.
Components of ECCE
- Health and nutrition
- Safety and protection
- Responsive caregiving
- Early learning through play
- Family and community involvement
Who works in ECCE
Anganwadi workers, pre-school and pre-primary teachers, day-care staff, ECCE coordinators and NGO workers.
ECCE in policy
NEP 2020 describes ECCE as flexible, multi-faceted, play-based and activity-based learning, delivered through anganwadis, pre-schools and pre-primary classes. It calls for training of ECCE teachers and for links between anganwadis and schools. Internationally, the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.2 aims for all children to have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education. These policies explain why ECCE skills are increasingly in demand.
