Do pre-primary teachers need CTET?
No. The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is for teachers of Classes 1 to 8: Paper I for Classes 1 to 5 and Paper II for Classes 6 to 8. It does not cover nursery, LKG or UKG, and private pre-schools normally do not require it. Some schools may still prefer it if you will also teach Class 1 or 2.
What this means in practice
Under NEP 2020, pre-primary and Grades 1 and 2 form one foundational stage, so eligibility rules for pre-primary teachers may evolve. Watch for official notifications.
When CTET or a state TET matters
- Teaching Classes 1 to 8 in government or aided schools
- Some private CBSE schools for primary posts
- If you plan to move from pre-primary into primary
Eligibility for CTET
CTET eligibility is linked to D.El.Ed, B.Ed or other recognised teacher-education qualifications, not to private pre-primary certificates.
If you plan to teach Class 1 and 2 later
Under the foundational stage, many schools want teachers who can move between UKG and Classes 1 and 2. If that is your plan, look at the eligibility rules for CTET Paper I or your state TET, which are linked to D.El.Ed or B.Ed qualifications. Pre-primary training gives you strong early-years methods; adding a recognised teacher-education qualification and TET opens primary posts too.
Practical next steps
- Decide whether you want to stay in pre-primary.
- If you plan to move to primary, look at D.El.Ed or B.Ed and then CTET.
- Check the latest CTET notification on the official site.
Common follow-up questions
Is there a TET for nursery teachers?
No national TET for pre-primary exists at present; check state rules.
