What is the difference between a play school, pre-school and kindergarten?
A play school usually takes children from about 18 months to 3 or 4 for short, play-focused sessions. A pre-school is a broader term for any setting before Class 1, often covering play group, nursery, LKG and UKG. A kindergarten refers specifically to the one or two years before Grade 1 (LKG and UKG, or KG1 and KG2), often attached to a school.
What this means in practice
In everyday use the terms overlap, and many centres use them interchangeably for marketing.
At a glance
- Play school: youngest children, shorter hours, play and socialising
- Pre-school: umbrella term, may be standalone
- Kindergarten: the final pre-primary years, often in a school building
What it means for teachers
Play schools value care and routines; kindergartens value early literacy and numeracy through play. Pre-primary training covers both.
Choosing where to start your career
Play schools offer a gentle start, small groups and a strong focus on care and routines. Kindergartens attached to schools offer more structure, larger teams and often clearer career paths. Standalone pre-schools vary widely. Visiting two or three settings and asking about class sizes, training and support for new teachers will help you choose a place where you can learn quickly.
Practical next steps
- Visit different settings.
- Notice routines and expectations.
- Choose where you would enjoy working.
Common follow-up questions
Is a play school the same as day-care?
No; day-care offers longer hours of care.
Which pays more?
Kindergartens in established schools usually pay more.
