What age group does a pre-primary teacher teach?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

A pre-primary teacher usually teaches children aged about 2½ to 6: play group or pre-nursery (around 2 to 3), nursery or pre-KG (3 to 4), LKG or KG1 (4 to 5) and UKG or KG2 (5 to 6). Under NEP 2020 these three pre-school years plus Grades 1 and 2 form the foundational stage for ages 3 to 8.

What this means in practice

Exact ages vary by state, board and country, so check the admission age rules of the school where you will work. Some states have moved the minimum Grade 1 age to six, which pushes pre-primary ages up as well.

How teaching changes across the ages

  • 2 to 3 years: settling in, routines, language through songs, gross motor play
  • 3 to 4 years: talking in sentences, pretend play, sorting and matching, pre-writing strokes
  • 4 to 5 years: letter sounds, counting objects, turn-taking games, early drawing
  • 5 to 6 years: blending sounds, number concepts to 20, simple writing, group projects

Names in different countries

India uses nursery, LKG and UKG; the Gulf uses FS1, FS2, KG1 and KG2; Kenya uses PP1 and PP2; South Africa has Grade R; Ghana uses KG1 and KG2.

Why age bands shape every lesson

A three-year-old and a five-year-old can be in the same building but need very different teaching. Younger children have short attention spans, are still learning to share and often need help with toileting and eating, so activities are short, physical and repetitive. Older pre-primary children can follow two-step instructions, sit for a story of ten to fifteen minutes and enjoy games with simple rules. Good pre-primary teachers plan the same theme at different levels: three-year-olds might sort fruits by colour while five-year-olds count them, draw them and say the first sound of each name.

Practical next steps

  • Find out the admission age rule for your state or school.
  • Read age-wise milestones before planning activities.
  • Plan shorter activities (5 to 15 minutes) for younger groups.
ExampleMeera teaches nursery in Bhopal. Her 3-year-olds manage ten minutes of circle time, so she uses a song to start and a movement break halfway through.
What to keep in mind: Children develop at different rates. Age bands are guides, not targets, and a child who is behind in one area may be ahead in another.

Common follow-up questions

Can a pre-primary teacher teach Class 1?

Some private schools allow it, but primary classes usually need D.El.Ed or B.Ed for formal posts.

What age is LKG in India?

Usually 4 to 5 years, though some states and boards use slightly different cut-offs.
